J'ai fatigue
these drowsy clouds
thickening on the surface of my eyes
thinned momentarily
quickening me within
and I rose unweighted
just above the sullen world
and let go of myself
suspended

Signifiers
This morning, the wet smell
of melting snow, the sounds of chickadees
and that other bird with its two notes
of specialized loneliness
The feel of the sun on my face, patiently
gaining strength; pussy willow buds;
a woman skipping silly outside the courthouse
and a middle aged bearded man in his
work clothes and winter coat
high stepping
of melting snow, the sounds of chickadees
and that other bird with its two notes
of specialized loneliness

Fun Time
Weigh yourself down
to feel real
fill your pockets
up with rocks

Baltimore
Waking in a new city
without snow
everything seems strange
and good

Family Dining
What a starry night it is, you think
back from dinner with your family
during which your youngest boy
trying to impress you
put a whole piece of spicy sushi
in his mouth and had to
spit it out in the bathroom.
Later, he told you he
loved you, like italicized,
and that's really something.
Now, at the end of the driveway
getting the mail, seeing the stars,
looking at the dark house while
trying to find the key
juggling a bottle of wine
and the recycling bin,
You think maybe you should
write them a letter while they
still like you a little bit
apologizing for having to
go away someday.

Shards of memories
shattered, falling
senseless, disordered
until enough comes to rest
a mosaic vaguely in
the shape of my heart

No Comprendo
Remember that clown in California who directed the short film designed to insult the prophet Muhammad and his followers? I don't either. I heard his name in the news and dismissed him. I never watched the video.
People died over it.
Did you know the Pakistani government banned You Tube because of that little video? The people of the sixth most populous country in the world aren't allowed to watch You Tube in the year 2013. A butterfly flaps it's wings on You Tube and ...
This is something to ponder, but probably not to comprehend.

Not Yet
All night wind and snow
the car is nearly buried
and it's still blowing pretty
fierce, the oil held out,
the power's still on,
my bed is warm.
I'll wait.

Nervous Birds
This morning the storm had yet to arrive
but outside the birds were nervous
and now the gas stations have sold all their gas
and the governor has ordered everyone off the roads
and the snow has been falling most of the day, lightly,
the roads are frozen, temperature dropping
and the wind, now that it's dark, is rising to a roar
we make fun of the panic
and the weather girl's melodrama
while understanding all the while
we are but an inch away

The Hours Before the Blizzard
We seem to be all
shooting one another here
in the land of plenty
Meanwhile, there's a blizzard bearing down
and the media is making it sound like the end of the world
every one's driving stupid, buying gasoline, honking horns
rushing about, hoarding food and snow shovels.
Outside it's calm, and I'm using the car headlights
to pour five gallons of diesel fuel into the oil tank
because I let the oil run down to nothing again,
I buy some bread and lunch meat,
some bananas and spinach and there's wine,
my checking account is empty and the credit cards are
approaching maximum capacity.

Wild
A bobcat bounded across the road
furiously intent on getting out of
the path of my headlights, my wheels,
Taut, thick limbed, ferocity
she earns what she eats.
A complete and perfect being,
what excuse is there for us?
She's hunting tonight
the backyards of Belchertown.

the path of my headlights, my wheels,
Taut, thick limbed, ferocity
she earns what she eats.
A complete and perfect being,
what excuse is there for us?

Refreshed
This morning after a busy night
of anxious and wordy dreaming
I find him smiling from the couch
and within a few minutes telling me
everything of the past week
noticing the dusting of snow
fallen overnight and a tree
filled with five early Robins
bearing possibility and hope.

Running Out Of Road
Your kind of money
seems to only be capable
of digging holes.
I need some
of the kind
that builds castles.
Shit.
seems to only be capable
of digging holes.
I need some
of the kind
that builds castles.
Shit.
