6 Sentences
I found a blog called 6 Sentences the other day and made a submission to them tonight while I was at work. I didn't work too hard on the sentences. The submission was pretty silly. I'm supposed to hear back on it within 6 days. If it gets posted on the blog, I'll cut and paste it here. I'm going to start that 100 Words thing tomorrow at 100 Words.com. I haven't been able to maintain an attention span for the last month or so, let's see if I can do this. Working extra and trying to keep from getting swallowed by debt is the priority right now.

100 Words
I stumbled across a blog last night called 100 Words. The idea is that writers write 100 words daily (no more, no less) for a month. Each complete month is a batch. If you complete a batch, they publish it on the blog. Looks like a lot of participants. I think I'll give it a go starting the first of March. Maybe I'll copy and paste the posts to this blog. Can you do that? This is all still magic to me.

Distance
In the distance
the colored lights of the ferris wheel
and the sound of others joy,
when my eyes are closed,
I think it's panic.

"Oww. Owww. Owww.You son of a bitch, you're hurting me. Are you crazy or something? It hurts. Oww. Owww. Owww"
My office at work is connected to the emergency room by a hallway but separated from it by a locked door. There is what sounds to be an elderly woman in there now in great pain. She's actually been in there for several hours. At first, hearing her scream was shocking, disturbing, unsettling. After awhile, it became routine and annoying. She's got this pattern of fear and pain followed by lashing out followed by self soothing. I try to do other things and not listen, but there is no escaping it. She's got a very high voice. The sound creates a mental picture of a Muppet being tortured.

Special Election
Post election nausea. Massachusetts gave Ted Kennedy's seat to a Republican. People are excited, like some tyrant has been toppled. I hear this buzz and I don't recognize the people talking. They think somehow the Democrats are responsible for our current troubles after being in power for a year. The last administration's 8 years has nothing to do with this? I always choke when I hear the thought process of people interviewed as they leave the polls. Their reasons for choosing a candidate often reduce me to temporary despair. Will we ever grow into the power the right to vote has afforded us? We either blow it off or we wear it like a t-shirt to reflect some lifestyle choice. Political affiliation is now a package deal that we readily adopt, digest and become. One against the other. Solving problems is trumped by seizing and keeping power. The result is inertia.

Haiti, days after.
On the news tonight, they showed a woman discovered under a crumbled bank in Haiti. An earth moving machine was above her working it's steel claw not believing that anyone could still be alive below. Her husband was standing by unable to believe that she could be otherwise. Each time the machine took a break, he rushed in to see if he could find some sign of her. A voice called out from under the rubble. She was alive under there with her fingers caught under a concrete beam. It was incredible how well she looked, like she'd only just a few minutes before crawled in there. When they pulled her out, she started singing. She sang about not fearing death. The reporter asked her if she thought she would live while she was buried under there. Her answer was an almost defiant, "why not?" She had this look in her eye.
